TASK
Week 1
This week is the first class of the semester. We were briefed about our upcoming projects this semester, and we were required to find a theme and issue for our first assignment, which is to make a laptop bag according to our theme, related to any sustainability issue in the world.
We were also shown the recycled IKEA bags, that are going to be our final assignment for this module.
I chose coffee takeaway wastes as my subject, as I think this matter is a major ongoing issue that will not be easy to solve, and the materials from this subject is also relatively easy to obtain and the variety is quite wide.
Week 2
In this week, we proceeded to work on our proposal and moodboard.
I wanted to showcase about the difference between a sustainable coffee drinking culture and the usual, unsustainable routine that the majority of people are practicing. I hope to be able to advocate and spread awareness about the waste we make from a single coffee order through this moodboard.
In this week, I also started to collect my materials for the laptop bag manipulations, including coffee cups, trays, sleeves, straws, paper bags, and receipts..
Week 3
We did our initial design, as a guideline of what we are going to do in the actual bag
I also started to prepare for my texture manipulations this week.
I dipped the coffee cups in black coffee, then patted it dry and ironed it flat.
I recycled the paper bags and the coffee trays to make textured paper by ripping it into pieces and beating it into pulp after soaking it in water.

After straining the pulp, I mixed it with white glue to bond it together, so it will not be brittle.

Then, I flattened it on the frame and left it to sun dry.
Week 4
I proceeded to work on my materials at home.
I ironed flat the dried recycled paper, and broke it into several pieces to distribute between the front and back side.
After putting away the recycled paper, I arranged the receipts in the frame and stained it with coffe using a sponge, so it wouldn’t be drenched and dissolve in the coffee. I left it to air dry, as I couldn’t use iron on a receipt.
Week 5
I started constructing and arranging my laptop bag this week. It was Deepavali on Monday, so we had no class.
This was after all the materials was arranged, prior to the construction.
I sewed it with the PVC to keep the materials intact, and tested the durability by putting a laptop and tablet inside.
Week 6
This week was the submission for this assignment. We took photos from different angles, and had a model wear the bag.
Week 7
LIFE LINE CLOTHING MALAYSIA
This week, we went to LLCM to learn about more of the sustainable fashion industry approach. Upon arrival, we were briefed on the safety measures in the factory. We had to wear the safety vest before entering.
The dresscode was no shorts, no open toes, no short skirts inside the factory.
Before entering the factory, we were assembled in the meeting hall to learn further about the sustainabilty issues caused by fabric waste.
We also had a kahoot quiz session, to help us learn about this issue in a fun way. I won 1st
THE PROCESS
1. Collect
The first step is to collect from all the bins across the country. These items are collected in sacks, and can include fabric, garments, plushies, and shoes. But, the bin often also includes other wastes such as toys, decoration, and furniture that are not made from fabric. These other things still get collected and sorted, which will be kept if they have value to be sold or reused. In Malaysia, LLCM Has about 2500 bins distributed across the country.
After they collect from the bins, they weigh the packs and measure the volume. It then get sorted into 5 categories; Men, Women, Children, Summer, and Winter, to make it easier for further sorting in the upcoming steps, or simply to be sold to other countries according to those categories, depending on which category are demanded by the buyer, but as the categories are very wide in this case, the buyer will not be able to pick a specific type of item.
3. Compress
After the items are compiled into one category, they get compressed before getting put to storage to save space in the warehouse. It also eases the mobilization of the sacks, before getting processed.
4.1 Process (Sorting)
In this process, they sort the items into 20 categories first, also to sort rubbish or other items in the sack. They process about 200-500 kilograms of bundles everyday. Some of the materials are also used for upcycling. After that, to make processing easier for selling and processing, they sort it further to 516 categories.
4.2 Process (Upcycling4Better)
LLCM Works with several companies such as IKEA to upcycle their old uniforms or garments into new merchandise, such as bags, hats, or pillows. A portion of the remaining used fabric gets sent to India for mechanical separation to make new fabric.

After getting sorted, some fabrics gets split according to their materials for cutting to be made into other goods. Some materials goes for upcycling, and absorbent materials such as cotton, plaid, flannel or linen gets processed into the next step.
6. Cutting
The splitted material types get cut into rags and gets sold as cleaning cloth to car industry, where they sell
roughly 300 tons of cloth every month.
Meanwhile, other
materials that aren’t absorbent such as polyester, gets processed into fuel.
For the fabrics that
are unable to be processed in their factory, will be sent to India for mechanical separation.
55% of the things they collected goes for reusing,
25% gets cut into cleaning cloths
15% for mechanical separation in India,
and the remaining 5% for fuel and upcycling.
7. Selling
After all are processed in
the factory, the items gets distributed for selling. Some goes to other
countries to sell in bundles, some for cleaning cloths, and some gets sold in
their thrift shop beside the factory, Best Bundle Shop.
Week 8 - 14
IKEA BAG COMPILATION
The first step on making the bag was to make 2 designs of the bag. This bag will be made out of IKEA FRAKTA bags, and I focused my design to stay relevant with IKEA's identity on a houseware brand, focusing on functionality and ergonomic design, as well as versatility.
After making the pattern, I proceeded to make the sample. I followed an online tutorial video on how to make the pockets.
After the sample was done, I was advised to modify and add a middle pleat in the pocket. I will also be removing the front pocket as it will look very bulky since the back pocket is thick enough.
Also, I added and inserted a zipper in the middle, so it could turn into a small tote bag.
I updated my design proposal to match the vest and the tote.
After I was done altering my patterns, I proceeded into constructing the actual bag.
Then, I shot a Reels-style video to promote the bag.

Then, we shot a catalog photo with Mr. Daniel, This was the vest version.
And after zipping up the bottom, it becomes the tote.
FINAL COMPILATION
The bag is
inspired from IKEA’s wide identity as a
homeware lifestyle brand that focuses on functionality and
affordability. From ergonomic products
that we can use easily everyday, to products that are purely decorative.
With
2 versions of the bag resembling IKEA’s
identity,
this bag can be used for daily active lifestyles
and work utility, to fun and cute hangouts.
