Chosen Artwork Analysis :

Artwork Name :

The Love Embrace of the Universe, the Earth (Mexico), Myself, Diego and Señor Xólotl

Artist : Frida Kahlo

Date : 1949

Size : 70cm x 60cm

Media : Oil on Canvas

Source : https://www.wikiart.org/en/frida-kahlo/the-love-embrace-of-the-universe-the-earth-mexico-myself-diego-and-se%C3%B1or-x%C3%B3lotl-1949

This artwork created by Frida Kahlo on 1949 made me think about how we all have something to care about, and there is something or someone that also cares for us. This painting represents both the feeling of love and suffering, where she depicted her husband Diego Rivera within her arms symbolizing her affection. In contrast to this, she expressed herself with a drop of tear running down her cheek, indicating her ambiguous feelings about the world and her identity.

This painting also teaches us the meaning of life and how we should care for our surroundings. She depicted the universe holding her while lactating, representing how earth and the nature always fulfills a human being's need without any exception. The light and dark background could be seen as how we as mortal beings are always in the middle of life and death.

I personally view this artwork as a message for us to never take for granted about those that provides for us, and that we should also spread love and happiness to everyone.

Design Principles Analysis :
1. Contrast : The colors of the background being light and dark creates a meaningful contrast behind it.
2. Balance : The color contrast of the background divides the artwork symmetrically.
3. Repetition : Some design elements, which are the plants are repeated to create the nature environment in this painting.
4. Principle of Similarity and Proximity : There are several types of plants that are located beside each other in the painting.
5. Emphasis : The artwork emphasizes the focal point in the middle where Frida Kahlo drew herself in this painting.

Conclusion :
The dramatism and message in this painting is strongly supported by its emphasization on delivering the meaning through the subjects in this painting holding and caring for each other. It caries repetitions and similarity of certain objects with some variation to create a concept with different characterizations.

Design Principles :

1. Gestalt Theory

Gestalt theory is a psychological theory of perception that emphasises how people processes patterns as a whole, not as individual components.
There are several Principles in the Gestalt Theory that describes how humans perceives visual elements :

- Principle of Similarity
The way of perceiving similar elements to create links to objects of a similar nature.

- Principle of Continuation
The way of perceiving visual design from the element's continuous flow

- Principle of Closure
The way of recognizing incomplete shapes by filling in missing visual information.

- Principle of Proximity
The way of ensuring how related design elements are placed in the same section.

-Principle of Figure / Ground
The way of perceiving design elements as a focal point to differentiate an object from the background.

-Law of Symmetry & Order
The law that states how elements that are symmetrical are more likely to be unified.

2. Contrast

Contrast focuses on placing dissimilar elements from its surroundings. Contrast plays a part in providing visual emphasization on a certain object, to draw attention when expressing its contents.

3. Emphasis

Emphasis focuses on highlighting certain parts of a design work such as colour or shapes to create dominance for that particular element.

4. Balance

Balance is the visual distribution of elements in a design work to create harmony by ensuring stability in the artwork that can be achieved through symmetrical or asymmetrical aspects.

“Half Empty” - Ryan Thomas Snider, 2009, Photographed and published on Flickr.

- Symmetrical Balance
Has equal weight and arrangement on either side of the artwork.

- Asymmetrical Balance
Has unequal composition which creates a more dynamic visual variety

- The Golden Ratio
Is a mathematical concept that is used as a guide to create visual balance.

- Rule of Thirds
Is a guideline where an artwork is divided into thirds, and the object in that artwork is placed at the intersection of those lines.

5. Repetition

Repetition creates visual flow and rhythm in an artwork by repeating design elements, with added variety to avoid monotomy.

"Still Life with Pears" - Vincent Van Gogh, 1887, 60x46cm, oil painted on canvas.

The artwork above repeats one object, which is pear, in different positions, shadings, and sizes, which creates visual harmony in the painting.

6. Movement

Movement focuses on shaping or forming a design work with a visual direction for the eyes to follow.

The smoke created by the match stick flows into a certain direction that creates the sense of movement in the artwork.

7. Harmony & Unity

Harmony focuses on involving design elements that matches each other in terms of theme or mood. It doesn't involve variety as it is supposed to be monotomy.

Unity is a repetition of particular design elements, including shapes or colors that creates a sense of unification for constructing a theme.

The Yin-Yang symbol in the artwork above is a Chinese concept where two complementary forces balances each other and makes up all aspects in life.

9. Word and Image

The relevance of imagery in a design work eases the viewers to relate to a certain concept that is meant to be delivered. Wording and typography in a work of design deepens the meaning in  conveying a message.
