TASK

Original Artwork

Brief :
We were directed to improve the original artwork with Design Principle aspects implemented in our attempt to improve the artwork. We were also reminded that this task is not about remaking the artwork, but to highlight parts to be able to improve, or deliver the artwork's meaning.

Task 2 Progression (For artwork improvement)
Mr. Fauzi approved of the method of covering the vulgar elements in the artwork by adding clouds over it.

Attempts & Sketches

First Attempt :

I attempted to add texts and highlighting certain parts of the artwork, but it ended up having too much things going on the artwork. Although I did elaborate the meaning with wording and kept the artwork's balance, it overall is quite confusing to look at as every element collides with each other.

Second Attempt :

Sketch

Result

I added wording and made the text blend into the background. I was advised that this idea didn't really succeed in improving parts of the artwork itself, as the title text blends in to the background, making it hard to comprehend by a glance.

Third Attempt (Final) :

Sketch

Mr. Fauzi accepted my third attempt of improving the artwork as he told me that it enhances the antique and vintage feeling of the artwork, as well as making it more understandable because of the clear and visible texts. He also told me that the smeared text style also goes well with the background and vibe of the painting. As the requirement of the final task is A4 and the sketch was not made in A4 form, I changed the form and tried to adjust the wording to fit the new size better.

Final Result (Accepted)
Rationale :
The original artwork delivers the meaning of how us as beings of the universe protects and cares for each other. In the painting, it is depicted by The Universe, Mother Earth, humans, animal, and plants living in harmony and embracing one another. It also shows the painter, Frida Kahlo's gratefulness for the world and her culture.

Though it carries a very sentimental meaning, it is easily misunderstood as there are no means of elaboration for its message in the painting. It also contains mature elements, which might hinder someone from understanding and appreciating this artwork.

I attempted to cover the mature elements to make it more acceptable to a larger audience, such as children. I also incorporated wording and text in the artwork to make the artwork more understandable in a glance.

Although the background has been changed to a singular toned one, it increases the emphasis for the main part of the artwork, while keeping the symmetrical balance by making the text's colors light and dark, referring to the removed background's colors.

Changing the background also preserves the grainy texture of the original painting, keeping the harmony of the painting's antique and vintage feeling, supported by the smudgy and smeared text style to enhance the theme more.

FEEDBACK

Week 5 :

Mr. Fauzi told me that there were too much things going on at my first attempt. He advised that i should focus more on putting the wordings inside the painting itself to make it poster-like, rather than separating the image as its own.

Week 6 :

Mr. Fauzi advised me that my second attempt of the task was okay, but the third one is better because it is clearer in terms of visibility, and that it emphasizes the main part of the artwork better, with the changed background giving it a more rustic and antique feeling, which compliments the original artwork.

Week 7 :

Put the 200 word rationale in the Final Compilation as well.
